Right now, ARAUCO is hiring Technical Managers in Grayling, Michigan!

Primary Purpose:

Provides overall leadership, direction and consistency for all areas of Quality Assurance and Quality Control to include board emission compliance. Owns the day-to-day operation of the lab leading the lab/additives operation and overseeing raw and laminated MDF quality mill-wide. Sets the strategic direction of site quality and leads mill-wide activities in order to improve the manufacturing process by measuring, charting and reducing variation. 

Description of Essential Duties:

  • Owns plans for 1) board waste management/reduction and 2) downgrade improvement
  • Track and communicates data related to these 2 projects for staff awareness and participation to achieve improvements
  • Communicate with some frequency so staff can understand if gains are being made
  • Provides leadership to the Lab Technicians (day and shift) in the daily follow-up of forming, pressing and board quality issues in order to find root causes of downgrade/waste and enact solutions to avoid reoccurrence
  • Leads “continuous improvement” initiatives
  • Such activities can be mill-wide
  • Establish the key areas of continuous improvement for the mill to focus on, many of which will exist as trials and via the application of SPC
  • Utilize a variety of tools to achieve primary purpose such as SPC, data bases and trending packages
  • Coach staff to use the appropriate tools (SPC and trending packages) so the primary purpose can be achieved
  • Establish the plan for the routine usage of SPC by area owners and MDF Technicians
  • Routine publication and posting of same
  • Can engage the QA/DMC Technician and Production Process Technician to generate and sustain
  • Focus on those key manufacturing metrics that will provide the mill with the best improvements in consistent product quality, process stability/uptime and cost reductions
  • In-house quality communications (such as quality spec changes, quality updates, bulletins
  • Manage costs relative to minimizing the impact of trials and quality initiatives
  • Make “A” grade board during trials
  • Owns CPA Grademark Program and EPP (ECC) compliance
  • The QA/DMC Technician performs all tasks to ensure HCHO board compliance, including data management and communications
  • Maintains internal, lab manufacturing specifications (physical properties) and ensures operating staff are achieving those specifications
  • SPC can be a tool to achieve this end
  • Provides guidance for product optimization through data analysis and process improvements
  • Lead for additives usage and optimization of same
  • Ensures consistent product quality across all operating crews
  • Leads QA, Hotcheck & Retest Program and related databases
  • Is the Lead for the QA/DMC Technician and performance assessment
  • Review SPC charting at morning meetings for education of staff
  • Teach Lab Techs how to use SPC to manage the mfg process
  • Involves teams and individuals on quality issues as required
  • Works closely with the raw board Production Leads, Lamination leads, QA/DMC Lab Technicians and Finishing Process Leader
  • Ensures Day Lab Technicians have completed area orientations, training modules and competency quizzes
  • Sets annual training plan and budget for the area
  • Sets manufacturing specifications in conjunction with the Production and Plant Manager
  • Owns sand-off targets and optimization of same
  • Optimizes additives usage, reject, down grade and lab suppliers
  • Leader for additives and quality-related trials
  • Leads and participates in other trials as assigned
  • Plans, leads and communicates routine down day jobs and extended shutdown job plans for resin unloading, storage and metering of additives
  • Also leads plan for frequency of dryer cleaning
  • Ensures all startup check sheets are completed
  • Owns scheduling of additives deliveries
  • Contact person for Resin Supplier in this regard
  • Owns mill measurement equipment calibration, maintenance records
  • Schedules calibrations
  • Leads maintenance of all lab test procedures in accordance with the applicable standards (ASTM, ANSI, CPA)
  • Works on optimization of resin formulations with resin supplier
  • Supports Customer Relations as requested for the successful resolution of quality issues
  • Participates in customer investigations as required
  • Participate in down days and down day / shutdown planning meetings
  • Startup coordinator as needed
  • Leads the preparing and communicating of the mill annual standards
  • Sets raw and laminated product grading specs with the various production leads
  • Lead for Lab Rounds and related check sheet
  • Manages work orders for the Lab/Additives area
  • Works with Planners to arrive at a plan for down days and shutdowns
  • Participates in weekend on-call responsibilities

Key Expectations Supporting Organizational Structure:

  • Actively participates in operations, quality and maintenance initiatives
  • Is a leader in team approach to work and fostering the culture at ARAUCO
  • Supports and participates in the Operate and Maintain principles of the Team Design

Key Safety/Housekeeping Responsibilities:

  • Participates in Mill safety and audits
  • Review and manage safety work orders to ensure completion in order of priority
  • Lead 5S for the Lab
  • Leader for all safety requirements in the area
  • Leads in-house air quality testing and reporting
  • Leads safety orientations for staff working in the Lab/Additives area
  • Must be lockout certified for the Lab/Additives area

Budget Responsibilities:

  • Owns Lab and Additives budget
  • Work with Business Technical Director on additive contracts and effectiveness of products
  • Participates in the development of annual operating budget and capital plans for facility

Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

  • 4 year Degree in a related field preferred
  • Minimum 5 years’ of related manufacturing experience required, including direct leadership of people
  • Experience managing quality programs in a manufacturing environment preferred
  • Knowledge of CARB, EPA, and CPA requirements required
  • Formal education in statistical process control and ability to apply such knowledge for the improvement of business metrics
  • Able to lead people in a variety of manufacturing activities
  • Ability to undertake multiple projects and manage key business metrics
