Out-of-the-Box Recruitment Solutions by STS Technical Services

It’s Monday morning, again.  Your alarm goes off, so you quickly jump out of bed and rush to get ready for work. You realize that you’re going to be late, so you run out of the house, hopeful that you won’t find yourself stuck in the same traffic jam that you’ve coincidentally found yourself stuck in every morning… for the past seven years.  As per usual, you sip on the overpriced caramel macchiato that you waited ten minutes for and when you finally get to the office, you realize that there are five emails that need your immediate attention, a voicemail from an angry client and a presentation that you haven’t prepared for.  Happy Monday, everyone,  and now might be a good time to refill that cup of coffee. Tomorrow will be different, right?  Right?

In some way, shape, or form, I think everyone can relate to a similar scenario.  As humans, we like routine and we typically avoid deviating from it as much as possible.  Why? Because it is familiar to us, and with familiarity comes comfort.  There is nothing wrong with being comfortable.  However, being comfortable and following the same steps over and over again will lead you to the same results, over and over again.  In fact, it’s how Albert Einstein defines insanity. Insanity definition: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Insanity definition: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.  Insanity definition: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Did I get my point across? I’d like to think so.

The same holds true when it comes to recruiting.  After several discussions with fortune 500 companies, I have come to realize that many companies in various industries continue to utilize the same recruiting practices that they’ve always used but yet, they expect different results.  What some fail to understand is that, just like technology, the recruiting world has evolved quite a bit over the past several decades.

One of the most commonly used and outdated models is when a company has a need to fill open positions and, rather than being strategic, they forward those opportunities to a dozen or more staffing agencies and cross their fingers that the floodgates will open up with qualified people.  Sure, they’ll most likely receive twenty to thirty interested candidates, but how many of those candidates are actually qualified?  My guess would be one, maybe two, if they’re lucky.  Oh, and have fun trying to get a hold of them. Voicemails will be left, emails will be sent and you’ll be left standing with nothing. Sound familiar?  The sad truth is that this model is used more often than not.  This model isn’t wrong, necessarily, it’s simply one of the normal ways most companies choose to utilize a staffing agency.  Decision makers are often afraid to take a different approach because it’s what they know, it’s what they’re comfortable with, and it’s what they’ve always done.  But what if I told you there was a better way?  Because, believe it or not, there is!

That being said, I would love to challenge you to think outside of the box, step outside of your comfort zone and allow yourself and your company to be successful. One last thing… Don’t be afraid to deviate from the norm because when you do, you’ll experience change, and with change comes different results.  Oh, and perhaps skip that caramel macchiato on your way into work tomorrow, because let’s face it; the coffee in the breakroom really isn’t that bad.
