STS Technical Services is hiring a Weld Supervisor in West Point, Mississippi.
This role leads a team of welders supporting defense and commercial manufacturing programs, with responsibility for daily production, workforce planning, weld quality, safety and schedule performance.
The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on welding experience, proven supervisory leadership and a working knowledge of AWS D1.1, weld procedure specifications and production requirements in a regulated manufacturing environment.
Position Overview
The Weld Supervisor will oversee daily welding operations while providing technical guidance, monitoring production performance and ensuring work is completed in accordance with engineering drawings, weld procedures and quality standards.
This position also supports first-article and in-process inspection activities, welder development, production tracking and continuous improvement on the shop floor.
Responsibilities
- Supervise welders performing MIG welding
- Supervise TIG welding operations
- Oversee stick and flux-core welding activities as required
- Support defense and commercial production programs
- Coordinate material staging to maintain production flow
- Ensure required tooling, fixtures and jigs are available
- Verify welding operations meet engineering drawing requirements
- Interpret and enforce weld symbols
- Ensure compliance with weld procedure specifications
- Support compliance with AWS D1.1 requirements
- Support applicable NAVSEA welding standards
- Monitor weld preparation and fit-up
- Monitor in-process weld quality
- Review post-weld grinding and cleaning
- Support visual inspection of completed welds
- Ensure completed parts meet requirements before moving downstream
- Review blueprints before job start
- Review work orders and technical data packages
- Communicate job requirements to the welding team
- Track material availability
- Report material shortages to Production Planning
- Enforce safe work practices
- Monitor PPE compliance
- Maintain housekeeping standards
- Participate in safety audits
- Support incident investigations as needed
- Inspect completed weldments against blueprint tolerances
- Verify work against quality acceptance criteria
- Document nonconformances
- Initiate corrective actions when required
- Monitor production pace
- Adjust staffing, overtime or work sequencing as needed
- Support daily and weekly production targets
- Train and mentor welders
- Evaluate employee performance
- Conduct performance discussions
- Recommend corrective actions when appropriate
- Support welder qualification activities
- Support welder recertification activities
- Record production data in the MES system
- Record labor hours and job status accurately and on time
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum of five years of welding experience
- Minimum of three years of supervisory or lead experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment
- Working knowledge of AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code
- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a production team
- Ability to hold team members accountable for safety, quality and schedule performance
- Strong verbal communication skills
- Strong written communication skills
- Ability to clearly communicate technical instructions to production personnel
- Ability to report production status to management
- Ability to pass a hands-on weld test as a condition of employment
- Must provide a personal welding hood and gloves
- Must qualify as a U.S. Person as defined by 22 CFR §120.62 due to ITAR-controlled information requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- AWS welder certification
- ASME welder certification
- Equivalent hands-on welding experience in place of certification
- Experience in an ISO 9001-certified manufacturing environment
- Experience in an AS9100-certified manufacturing environment
- NAVSEA welding experience
- Naval or military fabrication experience
- Experience using a Manufacturing Execution System
- Experience with similar production tracking software
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly
- Ability to work in extreme temperature conditions
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to squat and kneel
- Ability to push and pull for extended periods
