Aircraft Upholstery Technician

STS Technical Services is hiring an Aircraft Upholstery Technician in Melbourne, Florida.

This position is responsible for upholstering parts according to work orders and engineering drawings. Responsibilities include foam buildup, pattern making, cutting seat coverings, sewing using multiple stitching techniques, seat cover sacking, cutting, and serging.

The role involves working with fabrics, leather, and foam to fabricate upholstery components for VIP aircraft seating.

Job Responsibilities

• Measure, cut, and sew fabrics and leather, utilizing areas of leather hides to achieve the best finish results.
• Cut, bond, and assemble seat cushion foam according to final design and style requirements.
• Design and fabricate quality patterns for upholstery and foam buildup for VIP aircraft seating.
• Operate sewing machines to seam cushions and join sections of covering material.
• Fit, install, and secure materials to workpieces using hand tools, power tools, glue, cement, and staples.
• Adjust and replace webbing, padding, and springs, securing them in place.
• Read engineering drawings and apply knowledge of materials to determine the types and quantities required for each project.
• Draw cutting lines on materials using patterns, templates, sketches, and blueprints, along with chalk, pencils, paint, and other methods.
• Identify potential upholstery problems and develop solutions.
• Mentor and train less experienced technicians, monitoring their work to ensure assigned tasks meet required safety, quality, and productivity standards.

Required Experience

• Generally, 0–2 or more years of experience in the assigned area of responsibility.
• Basic skills necessary to perform assigned technical tasks.
• Two years of experience using commercial sewing machines, sergers, and hand tools.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Basic knowledge beyond assigned work and a correct understanding of routine work activities.
• Ability to perform basic, less complex, and routine assignments.
• Ability to assist journeyman-level or higher technicians with moderately complex technical assignments.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering documentation.
• Ability to use measuring tools and perform basic mathematical computations.
• Computer literacy.

Education

• High school diploma or GED.

Preferred Experience

• Previous experience in the aerospace industry.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift 35–55 pounds consistently during 8–10-hour shifts.
• Ability to climb ladders and stairs.
• Ability to work in small, restricted areas.
• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
