Heavy Equipment Technician

STS Technical Services is hiring an experienced Heavy Equipment Technician in Savannah, Georgia, to support a start-up industrial operation in Chatham County.

This role is responsible for inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining material-handling equipment, forklifts and rubber tire cranes. The ideal candidate brings strong mechanical and hydraulic diagnostic skills, works well independently and understands the importance of equipment safety, reliability and uptime in a fast-paced industrial environment.

The position may require overtime, weekend work and emergency callouts based on equipment and operational needs.

Position Overview

The Heavy Equipment Technician will perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics and repairs across a range of heavy equipment and material-handling systems.

This position requires hands-on experience troubleshooting hydraulic, electrical, mechanical and pneumatic systems along with diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, brakes, steering and related equipment systems. Field service may also be required using an onsite mobile unit.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics and repairs on forklifts, rubber tire cranes and related heavy equipment
• Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic, electrical, mechanical and pneumatic systems
• Diagnose and repair diesel and gasoline engines
• Troubleshoot transmissions, drive systems, brakes, steering systems and cooling systems
• Inspect equipment for defects, safety concerns and potential mechanical failures
• Perform scheduled oil and filter changes
• Complete lubrication, fluid checks, adjustments and component replacements
• Use diagnostic tools to identify and correct equipment problems
• Read and interpret electrical schematics
• Read hydraulic diagrams, service manuals and manufacturer specifications
• Repair and replace hydraulic cylinders
• Replace hydraulic hoses, pumps, valves, motors and related components
• Troubleshoot batteries, starters, alternators, wiring, sensors and control systems
• Complete repairs and maintenance according to manufacturer recommendations and established safety procedures
• Maintain accurate service records and inspection reports
• Document parts usage and completed repairs
• Respond to equipment breakdowns
• Perform field service from an onsite mobile unit when required
• Communicate equipment condition, repair requirements and estimated downtime to supervisors and operations personnel
• Maintain a clean, organized and safe work area
• Follow OSHA, manufacturer and established company safety requirements
• Perform other equipment maintenance duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Maintenance experience with Taylor, Hyster, Kalmar, Toyota or Capitellar equipment
• Two or more years of experience repairing forklifts, cranes, heavy equipment or similar industrial machinery
• Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems
• Strong knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems
• Strong knowledge of diesel systems
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics
• Ability to read and interpret hydraulic diagrams
• Ability to use computerized diagnostic equipment
• Ability to use standard mechanic’s tools
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to prioritize multiple service and repair requests
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Good communication and documentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with rubber tire cranes
• Experience with large-capacity forklifts

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel and climb for extended periods
• Ability to work in awkward positions when required
• Ability to lift and carry tools, parts and equipment as required
• Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions
• Ability to work around heavy machinery and elevated equipment
• Ability to work around noise, oils, grease and other industrial materials
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment
• Ability to work overtime, weekends or emergency callouts based on operational requirements
