STS Technical Services is hiring a Machining SME / Programmer in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to support precision manufacturing operations.

This hands-on role is designed for an experienced machinist who can program large CNC machining centers, develop setups, support customer quoting and serve as a shop-floor resource for blueprint interpretation and GD&T.

Position Overview

The Machining SME / Programmer is responsible for programming, setting up and operating machining equipment used to manufacture precision metal parts.

This position works directly with production teams, tooling vendors and customer requirements to determine machining methods, develop accurate time estimates and improve existing processes.

Responsibilities

  • Review blueprints, manuals, specifications and sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, machining sequences and setup requirements
  • Program parts using Mastercam
  • Select appropriate tooling, tolerances, material requirements and machining resources
  • Set up and operate conventional machines, special-purpose equipment and CNC machining centers
  • Calculate and set machine controls for speed, feed, coolant flow, depth of cut and cutting angles
  • Run trials to verify machine settings and CNC programs
  • Perform first-piece inspections
  • Complete in-process inspections throughout production
  • Use calipers, micrometers, indicators and tape measures to verify dimensions
  • Complete required inspection documentation as parts move through production
  • Run prototype, sample and runoff parts
  • Adjust programs and worksets based on inspection and machining results
  • Develop machining time estimates used for customer quotes
  • Work with tooling vendors to optimize existing parts
  • Support quotations for new tooling packages
  • Assist with lifting and securing large workpieces into tooling and machining centers
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on machining equipment
  • Complete general machine repairs as needed
  • Operate forklifts and overhead cranes for material handling when required

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least five years of experience programming Mastercam and/or FANUC controls for large machining centers
  • Experience with machining centers such as Hyundai, Okuma, Haas, Doosan or similar equipment
  • Experience running first-piece prototypes, samples and runoff parts
  • Ability to adjust CNC programs and worksets
  • Experience lifting and securing large workpieces in tooling or machining centers
  • Expert-level blueprint reading skills
  • Strong working knowledge of GD&T
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Proven experience operating machining equipment
  • Strong math skills, including ratios and percentages
  • Ability to perform standard and metric calculations
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with vendors and internal team members

Work Environment

This is an active shop-floor position that requires regular standing and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Employees may be exposed to dust, oil, moving mechanical equipment and elevated noise levels while working in a hands-on manufacturing environment.
