Position Overview

The Prototype Technician supports the build and refinement of experimental and prototype vehicles. This position works closely with engineering and production teams to fabricate components, assemble systems, and prepare vehicles for testing and validation.

This is not repetitive production line work. It is hands-on development work where precision, problem-solving, and craftsmanship matter.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and modify experimental and prototype vehicles from detailed engineering drawings and layouts
  • Fabricate precision components using manual and CNC equipment
  • Assemble, rebuild, and integrate mechanical systems including powertrain, cooling, fuel, electrical, and HVAC
  • Install instrumentation and prepare vehicles for compliance and performance testing
  • Support testing activities and evaluate component performance
  • Diagnose mechanical and system issues during development builds
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to refine and improve designs
  • Assist in training and mentoring newer technicians

Qualifications

  • 1 to 3 years of hands-on mechanical or fabrication experience
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
  • Light fabrication and welding capabilities
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
  • Comfortable working in shop and plant environments
  • ASE certification preferred
  • CDL preferred or willingness to obtain
  • Ability to travel up to 30% in support of prototype activities

STS Technical Services is seeking a highly skilled Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) Field Services Technician for our client’s Anniston, Alabama location. This role requires an expert with extensive knowledge of the AMPV, including mechanical systems, air conditioning systems, hydraulic systems, electrical power management, automotive systems, fire control, weapons systems, remote weapons firing systems, and other subsystems. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to identify and troubleshoot faults, provide leadership and direction to field service teams, and train maintenance and administrative support personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Travel to Military Bases: Conduct vehicle upgrades, modifications, inspections, repairs, services, and maintenance.
  • Technical Guidance: Provide expert technical guidance to internal and external customers.

Experience Required:

  • Field Service Experience: 3 to 5 years in a field service role, mobile mechanic, or heavy equipment mechanic/automotive technician.

Experience Preferred:

  • Extended Field Service Experience: 8 years in a field service role or as a mobile diesel mechanic.
  • Dealership Experience: Dealership experience as a mechanic/technician.
  • Quality Assurance: Quality assurance and vehicle inspection experience.

Education Required:

  • High School Diploma: High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Education Preferred:

  • OEM Training/ASE Certifications: Private sector OEM training or ASE certifications.
  • Automotive Degree: Degree in Automotive Technology.

In this role, you will assist with diagnosing vehicle malfunctions, perform preventive maintenance, and repair a variety of heavy military transit and support vehicles under the guidance of skilled mechanics.

You will also gain experience in basic vehicle repair, paint and body work, and electrical diagnosis, all while working in a modern, temperature-controlled facility.

Daily Duties

  • Assist in diagnosing and repairing heavy wheeled vehicles
