STS Technical Services is hiring a Senior Design Engineer (Hand Tools) in Brookfield, Wisconsin, to support the design and development of new hand tool products and the continued improvement of existing products.

This role is designed for an experienced mechanical engineer with strong product design skills, advanced mechanical analysis capabilities and the ability to serve as a technical leader on complex new product development projects.

Position Overview

The Senior Design Engineer serves as a primary technical resource and mechanical engineering leader for mid- and high-complexity hand tool development projects.

This position combines product design, engineering analysis, testing and technical mentorship while helping project teams make informed decisions based on performance requirements and user feedback.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the chief technical resource and mechanical engineering leader on mid- and high-complexity hand tool new product development projects
  • Contribute to user-focused discussions that help shape product performance based on user needs and feedback
  • Provide clear engineering information to Project Leaders and Global Engineering teams
  • Support technical trade-off decisions throughout product development
  • Establish test regimens for components and assemblies with minimal guidance
  • Analyze test data and develop recommendations to support design decisions
  • Prioritize engineering work based on project impact
  • Serve as a technical resource within areas of expertise
  • Provide consultation and mentorship to other team members
  • Perform mechanical stress analysis
  • Complete tolerance stack analyses
  • Support mechanism development and analysis
  • Use calculations and software-assisted engineering analysis to evaluate product designs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Mechanics
  • At least five years of design experience
  • Strong proficiency with 3D CAD software
  • Experience with Creo, SolidWorks, NX or similar platforms
  • Strong experience with finite element analysis
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Broad knowledge of engineering materials
  • Strong understanding of mechanical properties
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes associated with engineering materials
  • Ability to travel up to 10 percent domestically and internationally
  • Strong interest in tools used within automotive, aircraft or marine mechanic trades

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics or a related discipline

This role is built for an experienced mechanical engineer who can lead technically complex development work, apply rigorous engineering analysis and help turn early-stage concepts into manufacturable products. The position combines machine design, mechanical analysis, testing, root cause investigation and cross-functional collaboration within a fast-paced product development environment.

Position Overview

The Design Engineer II serves as a lead technical resource on mid- and high-complexity new product development projects.

This position applies first-principles engineering, modeling, testing and statistical analysis to evaluate concepts, solve technical problems and guide design decisions. The engineer will also work closely with Project Leaders, Global Engineering teams and other cross-functional partners to balance performance, cost, schedule and user requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a lead technical resource on mid- and high-complexity power tool new product development projects
  • Provide clear technical information to cross-functional teammates, Project Leaders and Global Engineering teams
  • Support technical trade-off decisions throughout product development
  • Establish test regimens for components and assemblies with minimal guidance
  • Analyze test data and develop design recommendations
  • Provide technical consultation and mentorship to engineering and non-engineering teammates
  • Apply first principles to develop free body diagrams
  • Create static and dynamic models of new systems
  • Use analytical engineering methods to guide design decisions
  • Perform mechanical stress analysis on linear and non-linear systems
  • Conduct root cause analysis to identify and resolve technical challenges
  • Perform tolerance stack analyses, including statistical and geometric methods
  • Design and analyze gear-driven systems and mechanisms
  • Evaluate sound, vibration and dynamic system response
  • Maintain a system-level view of how interdisciplinary design decisions affect user needs and project delivery
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to identify and address issues affecting schedule, cost, performance and user requirements
  • Develop and execute early-stage development plans using empirical and analytical methods
  • Create structured approaches for troubleshooting and root cause investigation
  • Work effectively within cost, schedule, performance and other project constraints
  • Operate successfully in a fast-paced and dynamic product development environment
  • Share technical knowledge and best practices with teammates
  • Continue developing technical knowledge through hands-on learning and collaboration

Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of machine component design

  • Experience with systems where closed-loop performance, accuracy and repeatability are critical
  • Experience may include robotics, automated assembly, precision torque systems or control systems
  • Strong understanding of process control
  • Working knowledge of applied statistics
  • Experience with capability metrics, variation reduction and experimental design
  • Ability to understand how hardware, controls and user or environmental inputs interact to affect system performance
  • Strong system-level problem-solving ability
  • Genuine interest in construction tools and innovative product development
  • Strong motivation to learn and take on new technical challenges
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10 percent domestically and internationally
