STS Technical Services is hiring a Traveling Large Machinist in Mount Airy, North Carolina, to support precision manufacturing operations using large-format CNC equipment.

This hands-on position is designed for an experienced machinist who can program, set up and operate large machining centers while working from complex blueprints, specifications and tight dimensional requirements.

Position Overview

The Traveling Large Machinist sets up and operates large-format CNC equipment used to manufacture precision metallic components.

This role requires CNC programming and setup experience, strong blueprint-reading skills, mechanical aptitude and the ability to independently determine tooling, fixturing and machining requirements for each job.

Responsibilities

  • Review blueprints, manuals, specifications and sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, machining sequences and setup requirements
  • Select existing CNC programs or program parts and tooling setups from scratch
  • Determine tooling requirements based on tolerances, material type, quantity and available resources
  • Measure, mark and scribe dimensions and reference points on materials and workpieces
  • Select, align and secure holding fixtures
  • Select and install cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials for milling operations
  • Select, install and adjust tools in automatic tool-change magazines for lathe operations
  • Prepare and load parts into machining centers
  • Operate machining centers through complete production cycles
  • Monitor equipment for malfunctions and out-of-tolerance conditions
  • Adjust machine controls as required
  • Unload completed parts after machining
  • Follow written, verbal, diagram and schedule-based instructions
  • Troubleshoot practical machining and setup issues on the shop floor

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Three to five years of related machining experience
  • At least one year of CNC programming and setup experience
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints
  • Experience using precision measuring tools
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Strong math skills
  • Ability to perform standard and metric calculations
  • Working knowledge of basic algebra and geometry
  • Ability to solve practical machining and production problems
  • Ability to work from written, verbal, diagram and schedule instructions

Work Environment

This is an active shop-floor position that requires regular standing and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Employees may be exposed to dust, oil, moving mechanical equipment and elevated noise levels while working in a hands-on precision manufacturing environment.
