Position Overview

As an R&D Machinist Technician, you will play a key role in producing precision parts by designing manufacturing workflows, creating NC programs, and operating advanced CNC and manual equipment. This position requires technical expertise and a commitment to quality in a fast-paced environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop process flows for precision-machined parts.
  • Create NC programs for multi-axis turning centers, 3- and 5-axis CNC machining centers, and waterjet tables.
  • Select and request optimal cutting tools for precision machining.
  • Design and fabricate workholding fixtures for machining operations.
  • Set up and operate mills, lathes, and supporting equipment to fabricate parts.
  • Inspect parts using precision metrology equipment and prepare quality reports.
  • Edit programs and adjust speeds and feeds to optimize production.
  • Collaborate with production, engineering, and quality teams to resolve issues.
  • Perform equipment maintenance and preventive measures to ensure proper operation.
  • Continuously improve workflows by providing ideas for process enhancements.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Formal Journeyman, Apprentice training, or machining schooling preferred.
  • At least three years of machining experience, with aerospace experience preferred.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in fixture/tool design for prototype and low-quantity detail parts.
  • Experience with manual and CNC multi-axis lathes and 3-5 axis mills (Hurco).
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software (GibbsCAM preferred).
  • Knowledge of model-based machining in a CATIA environment is a plus.
  • Experience with 3D printers, waterjet machines, and related software (e.g., GrabCAD, OMAX) preferred.
  • FAA certification processes and AS9100 compliance knowledge is a plus.

  • Strong ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and instructions.

Physical Requirements

This role is designed for an experienced machinist who can take ownership of complex parts, independently develop and optimize CNC programs and solve difficult machining, tooling, fixture and dimensional challenges.

Position Overview

The Traveling Machinist serves as a technical resource for demanding CNC machining work, including advanced multi-axis applications.

This position owns the machining process from initial programming and setup through prove-out and production release. The Traveling Machinist will also support less-experienced machinists, troubleshoot complex production issues and contribute to improvements involving equipment, tooling and machining processes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop CNC programs for new and complex components
  • Optimize existing CNC programs to improve machining performance
  • Support advanced multi-axis machining work
  • Take ownership of machining processes from initial setup through prove-out and production release
  • Read and interpret complex blueprints and engineering drawings
  • Apply GD&T requirements during programming, setup and machining
  • Develop tooling and workholding strategies
  • Design machining setups for difficult or non-standard components
  • Troubleshoot CNC programs, tooling and fixtures
  • Identify and correct dimensional and machining issues
  • Use precision measurement equipment to verify part quality
  • Apply shop mathematics to machining and inspection requirements
  • Perform root cause analysis on complex machining and quality issues
  • Develop permanent solutions for recurring production problems
  • Mentor CNC Operators and Machinist I and II team members
  • Provide technical guidance when standard machining methods do not resolve an issue
  • Support the evaluation of new machining equipment
  • Evaluate CNC controls, tooling and related technologies

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineers, programmers, and production staff to resolve machining or assembly problems.
  • Participate in training and evaluation of team members.
  • Review blueprints, setup sheets, manuals, and sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, and sequence of operations.
  • Measure and mark reference points on materials and workpieces for accurate machining.
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, and materials for use with mills, lathes, borers, grinders, and shapers.
  • Calculate and set machine controls for speed, feed rate, coolant flow, and cutting depth.
  • Operate CNC and conventional machines to perform trial runs and verify setup accuracy.
  • Monitor machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance conditions, making adjustments as needed.
  • Verify finished parts meet blueprint and specification requirements.
  • Install replacement parts, perform functionality tests, and ensure proper performance of equipment.
  • Maintain 5S standards for cleanliness, organization, and efficiency within the department.

Safety Requirements and Physical Demands

  • Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
  • Must be able to read, see, hear, and speak English clearly.
  • Frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds; heavier loads with assistance.
  • May be required to operate cranes and forklifts as needed.
  • Work performed in a warehouse and fabrication shop environment with exposure to dust, fumes, and loud noise.
  • Occasional exposure to outdoor elements such as heat, cold, and precipitation.

Requirements

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED required

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of machinist experience or equivalent
  • Experience with FANUC controls and horizontal boring machining required

  • Able to interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and work instructions.

Shift:

  • Starting on 2nd shift initially but may move to 1st shift
    1st shift – 5:00 AM to 1:00 PM or 3:00 PM
    2nd shift – Sunday through Thursday 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM, 4:00 PM start on Thursdays.
