The Mechanical Design Engineer Manager will oversee a team of engineers responsible for the design, development and support of mechanical systems, tanks and enclosures. Position Summary

STS Technical Services is hiring an on-site Mechanical Design Engineer Manager for our growing manufacturing client in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We are looking for a leader who wants to make a difference and be part of a dynamic organization.

Working within a fast-paced environment, the Mechanical Engineering Manager will oversee a team of engineers tasked with the design, development and support of mechanical systems, tanks and enclosures. This position requires close collaboration with other departments to ensure quality, on-time project execution and continuous improvement in engineering and manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, and mentor a team of mechanical engineers through all phases of product development, from concept through production.
  • Evaluate talent depth chart, scalability of group, and prepare for future organizational growth.
  • Oversee mechanical design activities including CAD, SolidWorks, DriveWorks, PDM, modeling, prototyping, testing, and validation.
  • Ensure designs meet performance, reliability, manufacturability, and customer specifications.
  • Manage engineering schedules, resource planning, and task assignments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Product Management to align on requirements and deliverables.
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, tools, and standards.
  • Support root cause analysis and resolution of product issues during development and in the field.
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies and tools to enhance product capabilities and team efficiency. Maximize our use of automation in design.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Maintain ETO agility, while developing stringent processes for continuous/ repetitive programs.
  • Invest in relationships/ processes across cohort engineering groups.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 7+ years of mechanical engineering experience with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Strong proficiency with SolidWorks, PDM, and ERP system experience preferred.
  • Proven experience in sheet-metal and weldment design.
  • Deep understanding of manufacturing processes and design-for-manufacturability principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage multiple projects, and set clear priorities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a hands-on approach to resolving technical and production challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must be willing to collaborate, define the undefined, and effectively manage change.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Project Management software, ERP software systems.
  • Communicate through all mediums; In-person, chat, email, phone, written.
  • Be reliable, independent, and professional. Follow company safety policies.
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of this job; Walking, climbing ladders, dexterity to use tools.
  • Must have reliable transportation and drive legally between manufacturing locations. (all in greater Milwaukee area).
  • Significant experience with metal fabrication and manufacturing; Laser, plasma, turret, brake press, folding machines, welding, paint/coatings, assembly.

Position Summary

The Mechanical Design Engineer will focus on new product development and continuous improvement of existing products. Core Responsibilities

New Product Development

  • Lead mechanical design from concept through production release
  • Develop complete and accurate 3D models, drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Perform required engineering analyses and participate in structured design reviews
  • Support prototype builds, testing, and validation

Existing Product Redesign & Continuous Improvement

  • Execute cost reduction and value engineering initiatives
  • Improve reliability, manufacturability, and serviceability of existing products
  • Process Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) in accordance with change control procedures
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective actions

Product Data Management (PDM)

  • Maintain accurate CAD models, drawings, and revision history
  • Ensure proper file structure, naming conventions, and version control
  • Release documentation through formal workflows
  • Maintain complete and accurate BOM structures

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)

  • Ensure BOMs transferred to ERP are accurate and aligned with released drawings
  • Support part number creation and configuration accuracy
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain and Operations to resolve BOM discrepancies
  • Ensure engineering changes are properly reflected in ERP before production implementation

Engineering Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure designs meet performance requirements and applicable standards
  • Apply GD&T and engineering best practices consistently
  • Maintain full compliance with internal design control procedures

Additional Responsibilities & Accountability

Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFM/DFA)

  • Proactively design for efficient manufacturing, assembly, and serviceability
  • Engage manufacturing teams early to validate feasibility and reduce downstream issues
  • Minimize custom components when standard solutions are viable

Risk Management

  • Identify technical risks early in the design cycle
  • Conduct DFMEA or structured risk reviews when appropriate
  • Propose mitigation plans before issues impact project schedules or cost

Product Lifecycle Support

  • Support production ramp up and pilot builds
  • Provide technical assistance for field issues when required
  • Maintain long term product documentation integrity

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities for design standardization and modularity
  • Improve internal engineering processes where inefficiencies are identified
  • Stay current on relevant materials, manufacturing methods, and engineering tools

Professional Conduct & Ownership

  • Take responsibility for design outcomes, both positive and negative
  • Communicate clearly and professionally across departments
  • Manage time and priorities without constant oversight
