Staffing Industry Analysts Includes STS Technical Services on its 2022 Largest U.S. Staffing Firms List

STS Technical Services Top 100 Staffing Firms

Brookfield, Wisconsin, August 16, 2022STS Technical Services (STS), a company that specializes in delivering end-to-end workforce management solutions for the aerospace, defense, manufacturing and industrial industries, is recognized by Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA) as one of the largest staffing firms in the United States for 2022.

SIA’s list, which has been issued annually for the past 27 years, ranks firms by domestic revenue and covers companies that have generated at least $100 million during the previous year.

“Two years ago, when COVID-19 hit and the global staffing industry was flipped upside down, our company made the decision to shift our entire workforce to a remote setting,” stated Rick Koenig, President of STS Technical Services. “This decision forced us to rethink how we do business. We added new technology, revamped our training processes and continued to deploy unique strategies that would help our clients find the talent they needed to continue to operate effectively in extremely uncertain times.”

In 2021, STS Technical Services bolstered its Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO) solutions by adding new clients to its roster while introducing additional services to its revolving platform. The company also hired 50-plus internal employees to support the organization’s post-COVID uptick while bringing its total headcount to more than 150 workforce management professionals.

“Prior to COVID-19, our staffing division focused primarily on managing contract employees for the aviation, defense and commercial manufacturing industries,” states Bryan Shaw, Marketing Director for STS Technical Services and its parent company, STS Aviation Group. “During COVID-19, however, the landscape changed. The global aerospace industry laid off a large percentage of its skilled-labor workforce, and we needed to find additional revenue streams to make up for that loss. We already had our hands in the defense, manufacturing and industrial industries, so we tightened our focus there; creating new programs for new clients that turned out to be the revenue push we needed to see our company come out stronger on the other side of the pandemic.”

In 2021, STS Technical Services reported an annual revenue well over $100 million. The team grew its contingent workforce headcount from approximately 1,200 in 2020 to more than 1,700 in 2021. Today, STS Technical Services continues to capitalize on exciting new ventures while delivering its award-winning workforce management solutions to some of the largest, and most prestigious organizations throughout the country.

STS Technical Services Receives 2022 “Top Workplaces Award” by Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

In the early days of COVID, airlines felt the pressure of lost revenue as flights were canceled all over the world. STS Technical Services, a staffing company that serves clients in the aviation industry, had a front-row seat as the disaster unfolded.

“The commercial aviation industry was crushed in 2020. Nobody was flying anywhere,” said Bryan Shaw, the company’s marketing director. Regular clients began to put projects on hold as the need for aircraft mechanics and other service personnel dwindled.

As company leaders watched other staffing companies lay off parts of their workforce, the STS team didn’t panic, Shaw said. Instead, they took things one step at a time and transitioned their staffing team to remote work, while shifting to meet the needs of clients outside the commercial aviation sector.

The flexibility resulted in new successes. During 2020, Oshkosh Defense awarded STS a contract to provide workforce services to build a fleet of Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLVTs) that will replace U.S. military Humvees.

Shaw describes the contract as “a huge win for us while staring COVID in the face.”

This is the company’s first year on the Top Workplaces list, ranking fourth out of all midsize companies. Employees describe an environment that is rewarding, independent and supportive.

“I can see that what I’m doing matters,” one employee said. “I’m able to help people further their career and I’m given the support and tools I need to succeed.”

Founded in 1986, STS Technical Services began in Reno, Nevada. It started as a staffing company for aviation alone, but acquisitions and partnerships over the decades brought it into other sectors such as aerospace and industrial manufacturing.

The staffing team recruits for hundreds of technical, trade and engineering jobs, hiring skilled workers who can provide labor for a variety of clients all over the world. Today, STS is headquartered in Brookfield and has several offices around the United States.

Despite the international focus, STS serves a number of Wisconsin companies, including Harley-Davidson and Oshkosh Defense.

Nearly 90% of the staffing team works remotely, Shaw said.

“I think STS has been able to handle that transition really, really well,” he said. “They implemented a lot of tools that allow the team to stay connected.”

One of those tools is a bonus system to reward employees. Shaw said he thinks it is important that hard work is recognized and rewarded within the company, whose mission is “to promote the growth and well-being of our employees by investing in a cultural atmosphere that emphasizes our values and strives towards excellence through collaboration and fostering a sense of PRIDE in workmanship, reliability, innovation, generosity and spirit.”

The company’s PRIDE initiative, which stands for professionalism, respect, integrity, dependability and enthusiasm, seeks to reward those who go above and beyond.

The five attributes represent the qualities that team members strive for. When someone excels in one of these categories, they receive a token that can be exchanged for a monetary reward once they’ve collected all five.

And outside the workday, employees also meet up for virtual happy hours to connect and chat.

“Although I am fully remote, my managers at STS have always worked to make me feel included and valued,” one employee said.

Remote work will remain a facet for the company going forward. Future plans include the continuation of projects in various sectors and securing new clients and contracts.

“Our team is slated to grow,” Shaw said. By the end of 2022, he said the company’s revenue is expected to expand 15% to 20% from pre-pandemic levels.

“I think that’s a huge testament to what we’ve been able to accomplish, the hurdles we’ve been able to overcome, and some of the big, new client signings and projects that we have coming up in the pipeline.”

Welcoming Natasha Ruotolo Back to the STS Technical Services’ Family

Natasha Ruotolo

There are times when people leave a job they love to go and pursue other interests. At STS Technical Services, we not only get that, we applaud it. Chasing down a dream is hard work, and we will never shut the doors of opportunity on past employees who have proven themselves to be dedicated, determined and eager to learn.

Such is the case with our newest Recruiting Coordinator, Natasha Ruotolo. Natasha worked for STS Technical Services from March 2013 through March 2020, and we are so happy to welcome her back to the team!

For those who haven’t met Natasha, get to know her a little more by checking out the Q&A we did with her just a few weeks ago.

Tell us a little about your professional background, education and / or experience?

I worked for STS from March 2013-March 2020, and then I went to school to be an esthetician. Now I am back.

What do you like to do for fun when you are not working?

I am a mother of 5. All my kids are in sports (baseball and softball), so that takes up most of my time.

If you could be any superhero, which superhero would you be and why?

To be honest, I have no idea. Not really into superheros.

Welcoming Jett Ryll to the STS Technical Services’ Family

Jett Ryll

Our newest Technical Recruiter in Jensen Beach, Florida, is a guy by the name of Jett Ryll. Jett is no stranger to aviation. In fact, you can say that his blood is made of equal parts jet fuel and contrail exhaust.

His father works for Precision Jet in Stuart, Florida, and he started helping his dad around the shop when he was 13 years old. Here he would stay up until 2015 when he decided to attend Florida Atlantic University where he received his B.A. degree in Communications with a minor in history.

Jett will be working directly with T.J. Scott’s team (God bless him) while focusing much of his time and attention to filling internal positions for STS Aviation Services and STS Line Maintenance.

If you are interested in learning more about your new colleague, check out the Q&A we did with him a week or so ago.

Jett, welcome to the family, man. Once you’re in you can never leave!

Tell us a little about your professional background, education and / or experience?

My dad works for Precision Jet and Fair winds here in Stuart Florida. I have been around aviation my entire life. When I was 13 years old, I started to help out around Precision Jet with whatever they needed done (cleaning parts, cleaning floors, helping mechanics, etc.).

I worked for my dad until I graduated in 2015 from Jensen Beach High School. I then decided to further my education at Florida Atlantic University where I spent four years obtaining my Bachelor’s degree in communication studies with a minor in history. Right after graduating from FAU, I was able to land a job with a hotel marketing company in Fort Lauderdale, however that lasted a few weeks as the COVID-19 Pandemic had become a serious threat; one that left me furloughed. I then moved back home to Jensen Beach where I started working as a parts specialist for a motorcycle dealership (WMR Competition Performance). While at WMR, I became familiar with the software they were using, built strong with relations with customers and clients, sold an array of parts and motorcycle gear and a whole lot more. I was with WMR for almost 2 years before starting my career here at STS this past week.

What do you like to do for fun when you are not working?

When I am not working, I enjoy playing with my 9-month-old golden retriever, being with my girlfriend and spending time with my family. I love playing video game, and I am a big Ohio State Buckeye fan so on Saturdays I love to watch the Buckeyes play. I still ride and race dirt bikes, love watching movies and being outside.

If you could be any superhero, which superhero would you be and why?

If I could be any superhero, I would most likely be Iron Man because of his ability to adapt to any situation. As he progresses, he is always making changes to his suit based on his past experience with villains, and he can fly, which is huge plus for an aviation enthusiast like myself.
