The Art of Resume Writing: Insights from STS Technical Services

The Art of Resume Writing: Insights from STS Technical Services

In today’s competitive job market, crafting a resume that stands out is more challenging than ever. At STS Technical Services, we understand the complexities of this task and the importance of making a great first impression. A resume is not just a document; it’s a personal advertisement, a unique story that needs to be told compellingly.

One of the primary reasons writing a resume is difficult is the balancing act it requires. You must succinctly showcase your skills, experiences, and achievements while keeping the content concise and engaging. The resume must be tailored not just to the job you’re applying for, but also to the company’s culture and the industry’s current trends.

The struggle often lies in articulating your professional journey. Many job seekers find it challenging to objectively evaluate and present their experiences. It’s not just about listing job duties; it’s about highlighting how those duties were performed exceptionally. The goal is to paint a picture of a proactive, result-oriented professional.

Another significant challenge is staying updated with the ever-evolving norms of resume writing. What was acceptable or popular a few years ago might now be obsolete. This includes understanding the role of Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) which many companies use to screen resumes. Ensuring your resume is ATS-friendly while still being human-readable is a fine art.

So, how can you make your resume stand out? At STS Technical Services, we advocate for a strategic approach. First, understand the job you are applying for. Research the company and the specific requirements of the position. This insight will guide you in customizing your resume to resonate with the potential employer.

Focus on achievements rather than just responsibilities. Quantify your accomplishments where possible. Did you increase sales, reduce costs, improve efficiency, or lead a successful project? These concrete examples demonstrate your impact and set you apart.

Don’t underestimate the power of a well-structured, visually appealing resume. Use a clean, professional format with strategic use of white space and bullet points to enhance readability. While creativity can be a plus in certain industries, clarity and professionalism are always in style.

Moreover, in this digital age, consider building an online portfolio or a professional LinkedIn profile to complement your resume. These platforms offer more space to detail your professional story and showcase your work.

Lastly, always remember that a resume is not set in stone. It should be a living document that evolves with your career. Regular updates and tweaks based on your growing experiences and changing industry trends are essential.

In conclusion, writing a resume is indeed a challenging task, but it’s also an opportunity to reflect on your professional journey and present yourself as the ideal candidate. At STS Technical Services, we believe that with the right strategy, attention to detail, and a touch of creativity, your resume can open doors to exciting new career opportunities.

Top 5 Resume Tips for Veterans Waving Goodbye to Camo

Top 5 Resume Tips for Veterans Waving Goodbye to Camo

Hey there, Veterans! Are you ready to trade in your combat boots for a snazzy pair of wingtips? It’s your pals at STS Technical Services here, and we’re locked and loaded with insider intel that’ll turn your military resume into a civilian employment magnet. So, let’s embark on a mission to transform your service stripes into pinstripes with these five battle-tested resume tips!

1. Camouflage to Corporate: Translate Your Military Lingo

Listen up, troop! The corporate world might not understand our talk about “FUBAR” or “snafus,” but they sure will get excited about “strategic planning” and “crisis management.” It’s time to demilitarize your resume. Trade in those acronyms for clear, jargon-free language that even a civilian can salute. Remember, it’s not just a “recon mission,” it’s “comprehensive market research.”

2. Your Secret Weapon: Highlighting Transferable Skills

Whether you’ve been navigating the seas or the skies, you’ve got a cargo hold of transferable skills. Leadership? Check. Teamwork? You bet! The ability to stay calm when the espresso machine breaks? Absolutely. Let’s put those skills front and center. After all, you didn’t just serve; you acquired a skillset that’s as valuable in the boardroom as it is on the battlefield.

3. Operation Experience: Civilianize Your Achievements

Your military missions have been all about teamwork, precision, and execution under pressure. It’s time to debrief your potential employers on your accomplishments without needing a security clearance. Quantify your victories with stats and figures that’ll make civilian employers stand at attention. Managed a team? That’s leadership. Saved the day? That’s problem-solving. Make it so compelling that even a drill sergeant would smile.

4. Recon Your References: Gather Your Civilian Allies

Sure, your commanding officer knows you’re the best, but what about Mr. Smith from the non-profit where you volunteered? Or perhaps Ms. Johnson from the part-time gig you tackled between drills? These are the civilian allies who’ll vouch for your transition from tactical to practical. Choose references who can speak to your character and work ethic in civilian speak. Rally the troops!

5. Dress to Impress: A Resume That Salutes Your Future

Your resume is your first impression, so let’s make sure it’s more polished than a freshly shined pair of boots. Use a clean, modern format that passes inspection at first glance. Bullet points are your friends, and white space is your secret ally. This is no time for a disorderly conduct of fonts and graphics. Keep it sharp, soldier!

March On

Marching into the civilian workforce doesn’t have to be a solo mission. With these top-secret tips from your strategic partners at STS Technical Services, you’re ready to conquer the job front. Remember, your service has already proven your dedication and discipline; now let’s showcase it on paper. Dismissed!

STS Technical Services Receives 2022 “Top Workplaces Award” by Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

In the early days of COVID, airlines felt the pressure of lost revenue as flights were canceled all over the world. STS Technical Services, a staffing company that serves clients in the aviation industry, had a front-row seat as the disaster unfolded.

“The commercial aviation industry was crushed in 2020. Nobody was flying anywhere,” said Bryan Shaw, the company’s marketing director. Regular clients began to put projects on hold as the need for aircraft mechanics and other service personnel dwindled.

As company leaders watched other staffing companies lay off parts of their workforce, the STS team didn’t panic, Shaw said. Instead, they took things one step at a time and transitioned their staffing team to remote work, while shifting to meet the needs of clients outside the commercial aviation sector.

The flexibility resulted in new successes. During 2020, Oshkosh Defense awarded STS a contract to provide workforce services to build a fleet of Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLVTs) that will replace U.S. military Humvees.

Shaw describes the contract as “a huge win for us while staring COVID in the face.”

This is the company’s first year on the Top Workplaces list, ranking fourth out of all midsize companies. Employees describe an environment that is rewarding, independent and supportive.

“I can see that what I’m doing matters,” one employee said. “I’m able to help people further their career and I’m given the support and tools I need to succeed.”

Founded in 1986, STS Technical Services began in Reno, Nevada. It started as a staffing company for aviation alone, but acquisitions and partnerships over the decades brought it into other sectors such as aerospace and industrial manufacturing.

The staffing team recruits for hundreds of technical, trade and engineering jobs, hiring skilled workers who can provide labor for a variety of clients all over the world. Today, STS is headquartered in Brookfield and has several offices around the United States.

Despite the international focus, STS serves a number of Wisconsin companies, including Harley-Davidson and Oshkosh Defense.

Nearly 90% of the staffing team works remotely, Shaw said.

“I think STS has been able to handle that transition really, really well,” he said. “They implemented a lot of tools that allow the team to stay connected.”

One of those tools is a bonus system to reward employees. Shaw said he thinks it is important that hard work is recognized and rewarded within the company, whose mission is “to promote the growth and well-being of our employees by investing in a cultural atmosphere that emphasizes our values and strives towards excellence through collaboration and fostering a sense of PRIDE in workmanship, reliability, innovation, generosity and spirit.”

The company’s PRIDE initiative, which stands for professionalism, respect, integrity, dependability and enthusiasm, seeks to reward those who go above and beyond.

The five attributes represent the qualities that team members strive for. When someone excels in one of these categories, they receive a token that can be exchanged for a monetary reward once they’ve collected all five.

And outside the workday, employees also meet up for virtual happy hours to connect and chat.

“Although I am fully remote, my managers at STS have always worked to make me feel included and valued,” one employee said.

Remote work will remain a facet for the company going forward. Future plans include the continuation of projects in various sectors and securing new clients and contracts.

“Our team is slated to grow,” Shaw said. By the end of 2022, he said the company’s revenue is expected to expand 15% to 20% from pre-pandemic levels.

“I think that’s a huge testament to what we’ve been able to accomplish, the hurdles we’ve been able to overcome, and some of the big, new client signings and projects that we have coming up in the pipeline.”

Welcoming Amanda Gilliam to the STS Technical Services’ Family

Amanda Gilliam

You don’t have to have a background in aviation to thrive in our world. In fact, many who join our staffing team come from industries like marketing, sales, psychology, business development and even social work; to name a few. Our team is unique. Our team is eclectic. Our team is diverse, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

For us, it’s not where you’ve been that matters but where you want to go. And when we first met Amanda Gilliam, we knew right away that she was ambitious, focused and driven to great things. That’s all that really mattered to us, and we hired her on the spot.

Amanda joined STS Technical Services this past week as its newest Program Assistant. She will be working directly with our crew in Oscoda, Michigan, and we are thrilled to have her on board.

For anyone who would like to get to know Amanda a little bit, check out the quick Q&A we did below.

Thanks, for taking the time, everyone.

Amanda, welcome to the team! We are so very grateful to have you.

Tell us a little about your professional background, education and / or experience?

I am a recent graduate from Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in social work. During my time in the social work field, I worked with Department of Health and Human Services in the Foster Care and Child Protective Services Department. I’m new to the aviation world and very excited to learn!

What do you like to do for fun when you are not working?

If I’m not working, some of the things I do for fun include going on a boat, playing Fortnite with my 7-year-old nephew, going on bike rides, or re-watching The Real Housewives of New York City for the 30th time.

If you could be any superhero, which superhero would you be and why?

If I could be any superhero I would be The Toxic Avenger because he found a way to make falling into a barrel of toxic waste while turning into a scary monster a positive thing and a way to help others. I think we could all use a mindset like that (lol).

Not everyone takes a straight path in life, and that’s more than OK. In fact, those who embrace a zig-zag approach often turn out to be far more interesting than those who simply do what’s expected and never veer.

Sachi Greene Named to SIA’s 40-Under-40 List for 2021

Sachi Greene

Denver, CO., July 27, 2021Sachi Greene, SVP of Operations for STS Technical Services (STS), was recently named to Staffing Industry Analysts’ (SIA) 40-under-40 list for 2021.

As one of the youngest members of STS’ executive team, Greene has spent the past eighteen months leading a company-wide effort to increase the organization’s use of technology and automation; a need driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and the team’s decision to shift to a fully-remote workforce.

“The pandemic has made this year extremely challenging, so to be be recognized by SIA for the work that I have been doing is an amazing feeling,” states Greene. “But this honor isn’t mine alone. My team is the primary reason I’m here today. Without their dedication and hard work, we wouldn’t be bouncing back as quickly as we are, so let me take a quick moment to thank each of them for their exceptional effort, kindness and support. I genuinely appreciate each of you and cannot thank you all enough.”

STS Technical Services specializes in providing workforce management solutions to clients across the aerospace, industrial, manufacturing and defense industries. And when the pandemic hit, the team made a decision to move it’s entire workforce out of four main U.S.-based offices and into fully-remote work environments. “The decision was easy for us to make. We had to keep our people safe. But to shift a workforce of 100+ into remote-work-only mode was a daunting task. I am proud to say, however, that everything has worked out really well. In fact, over the past year and a half, my team and I have implemented a variety of workflow automations and improvements that allow our workforce to maximize its efficiency, regardless of where our people login from,” says Greene.

“While the setbacks we experienced as a company due to the global pandemic were challenging, emerging from the downturn and into one of the tightest labor markets we have ever seen has made it even more important that our organization continues to be creative in its approach,” sites Greene. “Making sure that STS Technical Services is poised to execute on both its internal hiring needs and external client priorities right now is crucial to our company’s long-term success. That being said, we’ll continue to embrace the challenges as they come while remaining forever adaptable and open to change.”
